Amir Hamzah remembered

MEDAN, North Sumatra: Intellectuals in the city plan to mark
the 50th anniversary of well-known writer Tengku Amir Hamzah's
death with seminars from June 8 and June 9.

The organizing committee's chairman, Abubakar Siddiq, said the
two-day seminar will discuss Amir Hamzah's ideas as both a poet
and national hero.

The seminar will feature Sapardi Djoko Pramono, dean of
University of Indonesia's literature department and Mursal Esten,
a professor from the Padang Teachers' Training and Education
Institute.

Poems written by Hamzah, who was conferred the national hero
title in 1975, will also be read at the seminar. (pan)
