American League victories for Athletics, Angels

Reuters, Oakland, California

Tim Hudson pitched a complete game three-hitter and Scott Hatteberg drove in the only run as the Oakland Athletics defeated the slumping Seattle Mariners 1-0 in the American League on Saturday.

The win meant the Athletics retained a share of first place in the AL West with the Anaheim Angels, who beat Texas.

Seattle has lost six in a row and has fallen nine games out of the wild card race after being blanked for the second straight day.

Hudson (14-9) struck out two and walked two in pitching his second career shutout and 11th career complete game.

He retired the last 17 batters he faced in helping Oakland pick up its major league-leading 19th shutout of the season.

Hatteberg's two-out single in the second inning scored Terrence Long with the game's only run.

Jamie Moyer (13-8) took the loss, going eight innings and allowing just one unearned run on three hits. He struck out seven and walked two.

In Anaheim, the Angels tied a club record with their 93rd win of the season, overcoming the Texas Rangers 8-6 to make it five victories in a row and 15 in the last 16.

In New York, Jeff Liefer hit a three-run homer and Joe Crede added a solo blast as the Chicago White Sox routed the New York Yankees for the second straight day, 8-1.

In Toronto, the Blue Jays won their sixth straight game, as Carlos Delgado hit a pair of homers in an 8-4 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

In Boston, Derek Lowe won his 20th game of the season and Manny Ramirez hit two homers to steer the Red Sox to a 6-4 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles.

In the National League, Randy Johnson pitched a complete-game three-hit shutout and struck out 17 batters as he led the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday.

Johnson (22-5) allowed just three singles and two walks in an awesome display of power pitching as the Diamondbacks continued to close in on another National League West title.

In San Francisco, the Giants kept their one game lead on Los Angeles for the NL wild card with a 12-4 win over the San Diego Padres.

In Denver, the Los Angeles Dodgers belted out 20 hits to romp to a 16-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

In Montreal, Michael Barrett and Endy Chavez hit two-run doubles to key a four-run sixth inning as the Expos edged the New York Mets 5-4.

In Philadelphia, Eric Junge pitched five solid innings in an emergency start to lead the Phillies past the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1.
