American deported for visa violation

BANDARLAMPUNG, Lampung: Larry D. Munsey, an American researcher, was deported on Wednesday, reportedly for visa violations, his lawyer Rozali Umar, said on Thursday.

The 58-year-old U.S. citizen was arrested recently after he was nabbed while trying to catch butterflies in the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park in Lampung.

Chief of Lampung provincial police Brig. Gen. Primanto said that he was later investigated on suspicion of poaching protected butterflies.

The poaching charge was not proven, as the butterflies he had captured were neither rare nor protected. So instead, the police decided to charge Mr. Munsey with a visa violation, said Primanto.

The police chief did not go into details, but is assumed that Munsey may have either over-stayed a short visit tourist visa or did not have the type of visa allowing for research. -- Antara
