Ambon cannot wait

We don't believe (Vice President) Megawati is afraid to go to Ambon because of any physical danger that such a visit may involve. Considering her past record of resistance against oppression we are certain that is far from the truth. But a visit to Ambon may not resolve the problem, and if that were to happen Megawati's credibility as a leader could be damaged.

However, people will certainly understand that the Ambon case cannot possibly be resolved merely by a vice presidential visit. Still, by going there Megawati could at least better familiarize herself with the local situation. And, even more importantly, the people of Ambon will not feel abandoned.

Naturally the Vice President's personal safety would have to be guaranteed and extra precautions may need to be taken, especially if Megawati should wish to meet with representatives of the population.

Whatever the case, Megawati should go to Ambon as soon as she possibly can. The situation there has become extremely precarious and the people of Ambon can no longer wait.
