The Directorate General of Taxation has handed down sanctions, ranging from reprimand to dismissal, to 290 of its officers in the first semester of the year for violating internal regulations.

Tax office chief Mochammad Tjiptardjo said Wednesday the directorate general took the punitive measures to show commitment to its internal reform.

“We are working hard to regain the public’s trust and to avoid repeating the same mistakes we did in the past,” Tjiptardjo was quoted by tempointeraktif.com on the sidelines of his visit to Surakarta in Central Java.

Tjiptardjo lamented a tax embezzlement case involving former low ranking tax official Gayus Tambunan, which has snowballed after former National Police detective chief Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji revealed it last month.

“A mistake committed by one person has spoiled the institution,” Tjiptardjo said.
