Allergy to hard work

Being an obviously avid reader of The Jakarta Post and of Indonesia current affairs, I have also surprised myself by becoming a rather regular letter writer too.

The recent correspondence on Indonesian athletes prompts me to once again put in my "two pennies worth". I am by profession a horse riding coach and have taught riding throughout the world to many different nationalities over a period of 30 years.

I have also driven in all countries (and drive myself here too). My observation of the average Indonesian is that of a person very quick both in mind and body, extremely athletic, brave, aggressive, exceptionally artistic, "tuned in" and very sensitive. They could, without a doubt, easily be the greatest equestrian riders in the world.

The only two qualities that seem lacking are commitment (read also "allergy to hard work") and self-discipline. Unfortunately the two qualities essential to reaching the top, be it in the Olympics or for that matter any profession.
