Alleged looter shot during chase
JAKARTA (JP): Police shot a man who had allegedly stolen a Kijang van during the May riots Monday evening on Jl. Daan Mogot, West Jakarta, after he reportedly resisted arrest.
"The officers were forced to shoot the suspect in the right leg after he ignored their warning shots," city police spokesman Lt. Col. Aritonang said Tuesday.
The officers spotted the suspect, identified as Yor, 29, driving the stolen vehicle bearing plate number B-2096-GP. As he tried to get away, the van became snared in heavy traffic, the Antara news agency reported.
Seeing that the officers were running after him, Yor reportedly got out of the vehicle to flee.
The suspect allegedly continued running after three warning shots were fired. The officers said they were then forced to shoot him.
He was rushed to the Polri Hospital in Kramatjati, East Jakarta.
After receiving proper medical treatment, police detained Yor at the West Jakarta Police Precinct.
"During interrogation, Yor admitted that he stole the car at the Lippo Karawaci shopping center during the riots," Aritonang said. (hhr)
