Alleged credit card thief arrested

DENPASAR, Bali: Police arrested a man on Thursday for attempting to use a stolen credit card.

Siafiq Idris, 28, was arrested after attempting to use a stolen American Express card to purchase a VCD player at Alfa, one of Denpasar's largest supermarkets.

"The supermarket cashier became suspicious about the credit card and decided to delay the transaction. The cashier then contacted the police, who came minutes after the report. The man was arrested without incident," Badung Police chief of detectives Sr. Insp. Hussein Abubakar said on Friday.

The credit card belongs to Andrea C. Williams, he said, adding that two other credit cards were found in the possession of Idris.

The suspect denied the other two cards were stolen, saying they belonged to a friend of his, Hussein said.

The officer also said Idris told the police he had used the stolen card to purchase a Rp 143,000 Arrow shirt at another store before he was arrested on Thursday. (zen/sur)
