Ali Hasjmy dies in Banda Aceh

BANDA ACEH: One of Aceh's most prominent religious teachers Ali Hasjmy died in hospital here Sunday afternoon while recovering from a heart attack.

Hasjmy, 84, who was also known as a philosopher and poet, was well loved and known throughout the country. He wrote no less than 56 books throughout his life.

President Soeharto sent a cable expressing his condolences, Antara reported.

Aceh governor Syamsuddin Mahmud said while paying his respects that Aceh had lost one of its best sons.

Hasjmy was the province's first governor, serving from 1957 to 1964.

"Ali Hasjmy was not only an asset to Aceh, but to the nation," Syamsuddin said sadly.

Hasjmy is survived by six children and 21 grandchildren. (mds)
