Algeria to honor Sukarno, Alatas

JAKARTA: Algeria will present its highest medals to several Indonesian citizens for their contribution to the Algerian revolution against French colonialism on Friday in a special ceremony, the Algerian Embassy said in Jakarta.

"These medals will be presented by Ambassador Hamza Yahia- Cherif to Indonesians in connection with the 50 years of Algerian Revolution," the embassy said.

The medals were supposed to be awarded late last year when Algeria commemorated its 50 years of independence. The ceremony was postponed due to tsunami disaster and the Asian-African Summit.

According to one source who knew the names of the medal recipients, Indonesia's first president late Sukarno (posthumously) and former foreign minister Ali Alatas will receive Algerian medals along with several other Indonesians who advocated Algeria's independence. -- JP
