Akbar backs aide's governorship bid

BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: In an apparent effort to strengthen his control in regions, Golkar Party leader Akbar Tandjung announced his support for party member Syamsul Mu'arif's gubernatorial bid in the province.

Syamsul, former information minister, has expressed his readiness to contest the first direct gubernatorial election, which is slated for June next year.

Akbar has asked party members in the province to prepare for the election.

Golkar occupies speakership posts in 16 regional legislatures, as well as at least four gubernatorial posts. -- Antara
