Agung opposes House reshuffle

JAKARTA: Speaker of the House of Representatives Agung Laksono opposed calls for an immediate reshuffle of House speakers saying that it would be difficult to realize.

Agung, who is also deputy head of the Golkar Party, said on Friday that to reshuffle the House leadership, lawmakers must first revise Law No. 22/2003, which stipulates that the House Speaker and three deputy speakers have a five-year mandate.

"If we want to shake up the House leadership, then we have to revise the regulations first," he said.

He added that the political parties had the authority to call for a reshuffle, not the House factions.

The demand for a change in the leadership of the current House members elected last year came from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), which also demands that the House leadership should be held by five people instead of four at the moment. -- Antara
