AGO to propose deputy candidates
JAKARTA: Attorney General M.A. Rachman will propose to
President Megawati Soekarnoputri three candidates for the post
left vacant by Vice Attorney General Soeparman, who is retiring.
Rachman refused on Monday to disclose any name, but said all
the three candidates were senior prosecutors whose experience
included a tenure as Deputy Attorney General.
The President has the prerogative to appoint the attorney
general and their deputy.
Rachman officially sent off Soeparman on Monday in a ceremony
at the Attorney General's Office in South Jakarta. Soeparman was
named acting attorney general in place of ailing Baharuddin Lopa,
who died last July.
Former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes Ramelan, who
is now Rachman's adviser, and the current Deputy Attorney General
for Intelligence Affairs, Basrief Arief, have been touted as
strong candidates to replace Soeparman. -- JP

Officers launch lawsuits against Da'i, Megawati

Retired officers sue Da'i, Megaawati
JAKARTA (JP): A group of retired senior police officers have
filed lawsuits with the State Administrative Court against
President Megawati Soekarnoputri and National Police chief Gen.
Da'i Bachtiar over what they say was their forced early
retirement.
The lawsuits were filed in response to a decree from Da'i
proposing their retirement, and a presidential decree accepting
the proposal.
Included among the officers filing lawsuits against either
Da'i, Megawati or both, are former Jakarta Police chief Comr.
Gen. Noegroho Djajoesman, former Jambi Police chief Brig. Gen.
Toto Soenarjo Soewali and a number of senior commissioners and
adjutant senior commissioners.
The lawyer for the officers, Adnan Buyung Nasution, said his
clients decided on the lawsuits on May 30, after the Supreme
Court suggested in a decree that the officers take legal action
to resolve the dispute.
Da'i issued a decree last December proposing the officers'
retirement. At the time of this decree, the old law on the police
was still in effect, and according to this law the retirement age
for officers was 55.
But the President issued a decree accepting Dai's proposal in
May, after a new law had been endorsed by the House of
Representatives. --JP

Cholil to be sworn in June 5
JAKARTA: People's Consultative Assembly Speaker Amien Rais
said on Monday the Assembly would swear in Muslim cleric Cholil
Bisri on June 5 as one of seven deputy speakers, replacing Matori
Abdul Djalil.
The swearing in of Cholil, who was nominated by Alwi Shihab's
camp of the National Awakening Party (PKB), is expected to end a
battle of words with the rival PKB camp headed by Matori.
"We have decided to inaugurate Pak Cholil on June 5," Amien
said.
Amien had said earlier that the inauguration would be delayed
until June 20 because of the hectic schedules of Assembly
leaders.
However, the decision to move the date forward to June 5 was
made following pressure from a number of Assembly factions,
including the PKB, Golkar and the United Development Party (PPP).
Matori had nominated Syarif Usman Yahya for the deputy speaker
post, but the Assembly threw its support behind Cholil. --JP
