Administration to shut unaccredited schools

JAKARTA: The administration's High School Accreditation Council warned that private high schools and vocational schools that had not undergone an accreditation appraisal by 2006 would be closed down.

Council chairman Abdul Rochim said on Wednesday that the decision was part of an effort to provide better quality education to the public.

"By knowing the quality of each school, we can help to gradually improve them," he said on Wednesday.

In arriving at a decision on accreditation, the council would appraise the school's curriculum, management, facilities, human resources, financial stability, performance of students and the involvement of the school in the community.

Each accredited schools would be given a certificate stating the results of the appraisal: A for excellent, B for good and C for average.

Last year, the Jakarta Accreditation Council, the National Accreditation Council and the Jakarta Education Agency accredited 77 high schools and 168 vocational schools. -- Antara
