Administration to insure scavengers

YOGYAKARTA: The Sleman regency administration has decided to insure local scavengers, whose work exposes them to great health risks, Antara reported yesterday.

Regency spokesman Soerjadi said that the area has around 60 registered scavengers, but the actual number may be higher.

"This plan is proof of our respect for scavengers, who help maintain a clean environment here," he said. "Thanks to the participation of the whole community and the scavengers, the regency has won the Adipura award for cleanliness four times."

The scavengers will need to pay Rp 100 (US$ 4 cents) a day for insurance, he said. (swe)
