Aceh refugees in West Sumatra

PADANG, West Sumatra: At least 70 refugee families from Aceh arrived here on Thursday, escaping the continued violence and terror in the province.

Most of the refugees were transmigrant settlers from Java.

"We don't have any land in Java, but we could not stay in Aceh," said one refugee.

Local officials say they are trying to find the refugees temporary shelter and resettle them to new areas. (28/edt)
