Aceh problem

As an Acehnese I am glad to hear that there are many comments coming from the Indonesian elite on what is called the "Acehnese problem". It is really a controversy, as half of them agree to have a referendum, and the other half disagree.

In this reform era we are obliged to accept any difference of opinions. But, as regards the Aceh problem, it is more important to find the right solution than just make comments.

Since the Acehnese, in the recent mass gathering, demanded a referendum, the Indonesian government has not yet taken any serious action. Diplomacy is needed to attract the international community to invest their dollars in Indonesia, but preserving peace in the country is more important.

It should be realized that there is no conflict among the Acehnese community. The conflicts are between the Acehnese and the Indonesian Military (TNI). So if the President asks the Acehnese to solve their own problem, I think, it is a mistake. The problem is not going to be solved. On the contrary it will become worse. The problem does not belong to the Acehnese alone, but to Indonesia as well.

Do not try to use violence to achieve short term goals and completely neglect the long-term objective. Because I do not believe that the Acehnese wish to be separated from Indonesia. They want justice in every aspect of life. Once this justice prevails, the Acehnese would be very glad to remain part of the Indonesian unitary republic.
