Aceh mayor calls for fast reconstruction

BANDA ACEH: The condition of tsunami survivors living in temporary shelters is worsening particularly during the current rainy season, Banda Aceh ad-interim mayor Mawardy Nurdin said

"Many of them are currently experiencing very bad living conditions as tents have started to tear. This is worsened by the rain," Mawardy said during a meeting with top government officials of Aceh here on Wednesday.

He said that such conditions had prolonged the suffering of the tsunami survivors. He urged the authorities to speed up the reconstruction work in Aceh, which bore the brunt of the Dec. 26 tsunami, which killed over 130,000 people and left half a million people homeless.

"We must work harder to resolve the problem," Mawardy said. -- Antara
