A reflection of injustice
A reflection of injustice
The establishment of a commission of human rights abuses in
East Timor (KPP HAM) by the government has invited pro and con
views in this country. The government's move has been viewed to
have insulted not only the military members but also the justice
seekers, the Muslims in particular, so to speak.
The referendum in East Timor was implemented only in 1999, and
when there were suspicions that human rights abuses took place
following the referendum, the government hastily set up the
commission. While for similar incidents taking place previously
in other regions such as Tanjung Priok, Banyuwangi, Lampung, Aceh
and others, the government seems to be very slow in responding to
the events, even though both eyewitness for the above incidents
and the suspected abusers are still alive.
The government also has greater concerns with international
criticisms and threats rather than those launched by the
Indonesian people. Beware, do not wait until the human rights
abusers die of old age and are buried in a heroes cemetery before
any trial is conducted for their past wrongdoings. The people
would feel greatly insulted by such an action.
What really is the matter with the power holders in this
country, President Abdurrahman Wahid in particular? Are they more
afraid of international threats rather than the wrath of God? It
seems that we are now living in a situation where the law is like
a spider's web, which can trap small prey only while the strong
birds can easily escape the web.
