A perfect fit

* Buy shoes as needed, and not because they are on sale, cheap or a new design. When choosing a pair, consider where the shoes will be worn to, when they will be worn and which clothing they will be combined with.

* Consider your appearance and daily activities. Someone with a sporty character, who enjoys outdoor activities and has practical traits, for example, surely doesn't need to buy stilettos.

* Recognize your own foot shape. It will then be easier to choose the right shoes for you, such as whether they cover your slightly long toes or have to accommodate your wider feet.

* Buy shoes in the afternoon, as feet reach their most normal shape at this time, compared to in the morning when feet are inclined to contract. Remember that foot sizes must be adjusted to age, pregnancy and mobility; you will need comfortable shoes if you will be sitting for long periods in an airplane or behind a desk.

* It is better to buy shoes which are a bit higher in price but of good quality, rather than cheap but less durable models, because in the end you will spend a similar amount of money. Quality shoes are usually comfortable to wear, firm-shaped and, importantly, long-lasting.

* Pick the colors and models that match with most of your clothes. Light-colored shoes will be worn more frequently when you wear kebaya (traditional blouses) or evening gowns.

* Try shoes on both your feet before you make a purchase to ensure they are comfortable. Most people have one foot that is slightly longer or wider than the other.

* High-heeled shoes, like stilettos and platform shoes, as orthopedists warn, can cause pain in the muscles of the feet, hip and backbones. If you plan to wear them often, try to alternate with low-heeled or flat shoes every one or two days.

* A 2.5 cm high-heel shoe is believed to be the ideal for the health of your feet, according to podiatrists.

* Insoles are recommended, particularly under the ball of feet. They prevent bunching of the feet and toes.
