A kilometer banner protest dump

BOGOR: Hundreds of Bojong Mekarsari villagers protested on Monday against the Jakarta administration's plan to open a garbage dump site in their area by unfurling a one-kilometer-long banner.

The villagers urged motorists passing their area to sign the banner supporting the rejection of the plan.

They said the banner would soon be handed over to the Bogor administration.

They earlier expressed their rejection over fears that the garbage dump would damage their environment.

Jakarta has already signed an agreement with private company PT Wira Gulfindo Sarana, which owns the 20-hectare dump site in the village, to process 2,000 tons, or one-third of the total, of garbage per day. -- Antara
