852 inmates get reduced time

KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: Eight hundred and ninety-one convicts in East Nusa Tenggara were granted remissions yesterday in conjunction with this year's Independence Day celebrations.

"The remissions granted were from one to eight months," said spokesman of the province's justice office, Daniel Biantong.

He explained that, as a result of the remissions, 67 convicts were released because they finished their sentences.

East Nusa Tenggara Governor Piet A. Tallo symbolically granted the remissions at Penfui Penitentiary.

According to Antara, there are 1,212 convicts serving time in the province. (mds)
