800 job seekers demand redress

YOGYAKARTA: About 800 job seekers from Yogyakarta and Central Java plan to sue a labor supplier on charges of breaking an agreement to send them to Brunei.

Their representatives sought legal help from the Yogyakarta chapter of the Indonesian Legal Aid Institute on Saturday to resolve the dispute with PT AP in court.

Their spokesman, Sugiyanto, said the job seekers had paid the Cilacap-based company Rp 2.5 million ($250) last year for the arrangement of their departure to Brunei.

The company promised the workers would earn Rp 1.5 million a month each.

He said the company had promised to dispatch them to the neighboring country to work on construction projects in December but since then it ha refused to explain why the departure was delayed.

The company's managers were not available for comment yesterday. (23)
