72 companies pollute river

TANGERANG: Dozens of factories in Tangerang are disposing
waste into the Cisadane river, a councillor said.

Councillor Doni Mastopo of Commission F on environmental
affairs, said most of the 72 companies that polluted the river
did not have waste water treatment facilities. Some have the
facilities but they do not work.

He suspected that those companies had made false reports to
the administration about how they treated waste.

On Tuesday, the commission hosted a meeting with the head of
the local environmental agency, Undang Herman, and several
businessmen to discuss the issue.

Herman said that his office was still studying the case.

There are a total of 1,065 factories located in Tangerang.--JP
