70 percent of cases ready for court

SEMARANG: Central Java Police have completed the dossiers on 5,651 cases from a total of 8,168 criminal cases from January to October this year, an official said Saturday.

Central Java Police Chief Maj. Gen. Nurfaizi was quoted by Antara as stating that the dossiers had been submitted to the prosecutor's office for further process.

Nurfaizi's speech on a human rights discussion here -- delivered by Capt. Ismawati of the Central Java Police Law Agency -- also stated some of the weaknesses faced in law enforcement, such as the low ratio of one police officer to safeguard 1,200 citizens.

Another weakness, Ismawati said, was the lack of operational funds, which was set at an average of Rp 420,000 for each case and Rp 840,000 for each case considered difficult. Police also lack cars, the captain said.

"Each police precinct should have at least two cars. But some precincts do not have any cars at all. That's why many times police are late to arrive at a crime scene."

A lecturer from Sultan Agung Islamic University, Sri Sumarwani stated that people should not be too dependent on police, judges or prosecutors in handling criminal cases. "Law enforcement is the duty of all people," she said. (edt)
