7 foreigners enter Tegal Motocross

JAKARTA (JP): Seven crossers from Australia and New Zealand have confirmed their participation in the first leg of the Gudang Garam Motocross in Tegal, Central Java, Feb. 7-Feb. 8.

The seven foreign crossers will challenge the local crossers in the two-day event, one of the six in this year's national championships.

Organizers' spokesman Helmy Sungkar said yesterday that Tegal was chosen to hold the first leg of the national championships because of the city's success in holding a similar event in March last year.

"Observing the enthusiasm of the people and the participation of foreign crossers, the Central Java chapter of the Indonesian Motor Association, has agreed to hold the national motocross championships in Tegal," the spokesman said.

The Gudang Garam Motocross Championships in Tegal will be organized by Trendypromo Mandira in cooperation with Magic Motor Club (MMC).

Helmy said that Tegal had plenty of well-known local crossers who have competed in a number of national motocross championships.

The Tegal Motocross Championships will be followed by legs in West Sumatra -- most probably in Padang -- Solo (Central Java), Samarinda (East Kalimantan) , Palu (Central Sulawesi) and Ujungpandang (South Sulawesi).

The leg in West Sumatra will be held from April 11 to April 12 with the third leg in Solo, May 2-May 3, the fourth in Samarinda, Sept. 5-Sept. 6, the fifth in Palu, Oct. 3-Oct. 4 and the sixth in Ujungpandang, Oct. 10-Oct. 11.

Registration is still open for anyone wanting to participate in the Tegal meet. They can register at the MMC Secretariat, Jl. Raya Pengasinan Km 3, Purwokerto, IMI Jawa Tengah, Jl. Erlangga Tengah No. 5, Semarang, and Trendypromo Mandira, Jl. Kesehatan 2 No. 6, Bintaro, South Jakarta. (lnt)
