60 seconds for Heroes Day

JAKARTA: To commemorate National Heroes Day on Nov. 10, Jakartans are being urged to stop what they are doing at 8:15 a.m. and observe 60 seconds of silence.

City Hall spokesman Muhayat said on Friday the 60 seconds of silence should be observed at private and government offices, and all schools and universities.

Muhayat, also chairman of the organizing committee for Heroes Day, urged the raising of flags in the capital to show respect for the country's heroes.

Nov. 10 was named National Heroes Day because that was the date in 1945 in which a battle took place in Surabaya against colonial forces, three months after Indonesia declared its independence on Aug. 17, 1945. -- JP
