500 workers to clean up downtown

JAKARTA: Around 500 workers of the Central Jakarta municipality would be deployed to clean up garbage on the streets during the parade on the eve of Idul Fitri.

It is tradition on the eve of Idul Fitri, which falls on Nov. 14 and Nov. 15, Jakartans praise Allah in street parades, and end up at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta.

An official of the municipality, Dadi Samsudin, said that there would be 58 garbage trucks deployed to collect the garbage.

"The workers will be given Rp 15,000 to Rp 20,000 for their services," he said.

Last year, the municipality collected around 200 cubic meters of garbage on the same occasion.

"We also anticipate more garbage since we also plan to clear the streets from makeshift stalls belonging to street vendors," Dadi said. -- JP
