50-year-old woman dies in bakery fire

JAKARTA (JP): A 50-year-old woman died in a fire which gutted the back part of the large Mon Ami bakery on Jl. K.S. Tubun in Slipi, West Jakarta, early Monday morning.

City police deputy spokesman Maj. I Nyoman Suriasta said Sati, a bakery employee, was trapped in the fire which started at about 1 a.m.

"Two other employees, Agus Subardi and Kasipan, suffered burns and are being treated at Pelni Hospital," Nyoman said.

The officer said it was believed that a kerosene stove explosion caused the fire at the bakery, which also has a dormitory for the company's 200 workers.

Eight fire trucks from the Central Jakarta Fire Department rushed to the scene and extinguished the fire 45 minutes later, Nyoman said.

The estimated losses are still being calculated.

A security guard at the site said the bakery had temporarily stopped production.

"I don't know when it'll resume operations," the security guard said at the site. He refused media personnel entry into the bakery compound.

The bakery's employees were tight-lipped about the incident.

Mon Ami produces and sells a wide variety of quality cakes and breads and has numerous outlets in the capital. (jun)
