50 teachers killed recently in Aceh

BANDA ACEH: The Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI) Aceh chapter urged the government to give a security guarantee to teachers in the strife-torn province, as 50 teachers had been killed and 200 others physically assaulted in the past two years.

Aceh PGRI chairman Aminuddin said that incidents of violence against teachers were not dealt with properly via due legal process. He said that the province needed at least 15,000 teachers, while some 5,000 had abandoned their posts.

Woman teacher Rohana Hasan was shot dead before her son last Thursday by two gunmen who stole her motorcycle in Kuta Blang Gandapura, Bireun regency.

Comm. Taufik S. of the Aceh police admitted that none of the cases of violence against teachers had been resolved.

"We cannot guard the teachers individually because of our limited personnel but we routinely patrol areas liable to crime," he said. --JP
