43 arrested for cockfighting

KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: A police sergeant and an Army
corporal were among 43 people arrested here on Sunday for
gambling on illegal cockfights.

Antara news agency reported at least three people were injured
when police raided the cockfights, firing warning shots to
prevent dozens of gamblers from fleeing.

"We fired several warning shots, but they still resisted
arrest and tried to escape so we had to open fire," the local
police chief was quoted as saying.

He said cash, home appliances, motorcycles and jewels were
being waged on the cockfights. (byg)
