3.6t of marijuana destroyed in Aceh

BANDA ACEH, Aceh: Police in Aceh province destroyed on Saturday some 3.6 tons of dried marijuana, which had been seized as evidence in drug raids during the period between 1996 and 2001.

Comr. Laksa Widiyana said that the evidence was collected in several regions, including Pidie, Sabang, East Aceh, North Aceh, Southeast Aceh and South Aceh.

He said that there was much more marijuana which could not be destroyed because it was linked to cases, which were still under investigation or being tried.

He said that Aceh Police were trying to break the cycle of narcotics circulation in the province.

"Marijuana grows well in Aceh. Security officers will strive to destroy the plants so the young generation is not poisoned by drugs," Laksa was quoted by Antara as saying. (02)
