3,000 teenagers elementary education

BOJONEGORO, East Java: Poor economic conditions and a lack of awareness have contributed to the rising number of at least 3,000 teenagers in the Bojonegoro regency who have not continued their education beyond elementary school.

M. Sudjud, the head of the Ministry of National Education's office told Antara on Monday that most of the teenagers came from poor families in remote rural areas, such as Pregalan in Bubulan subdistrict, Deling village, and Ngambur and Malo subdistricts.

"Besides, most parents still think that it's enough for their children to graduate from elementary school. After that, their children will help them find money," he said.

Unfortunately, he added, there are also parents who can afford to pay for their children's education who also think the same way. (hdn)
