2,700 street vendors shown the road

JAKARTA: The Central Jakarta municipality administration plans to evict nearly 2,700 street vendors operating in Senen district starting next month to make way for construction work on a busway corridor from Pulogadung bus terminal in East Jakarta to the National Monument, Central Jakarta.

Senen public order director Darwis F. Silitonga said over the weekend that it was expected the evictions would be finished before the Idul Fitri holidays, which will fall on Nov. 15 and Nov. 16.

However, he was still unsure about whether a temporary location for the evicted vendors would be established. "We had planned to build a temporary market at the site of the Senen bus terminal, which is set to be relocated to Kemayoran. But the plan is still far from reality because people are demanding high compensation for their land," he said as quoted by the Jakarta administration website beritajakarta.com. -- JP
