2,600 books from Caltex

PEKANBARU, Riau: Oil company PT Caltex Pacific Indonesia contributed 2,600 school textbooks and sports equipment yesterday to several elementary and junior high schools located in remote areas.

S. Matullah Gani, a senior company executive in Minas district said the donation symbolizes the company's commitment to helping people in its area of operation.

"We will help the locals in meeting their basic needs as they have requested from us," Matullah was quoted by Antara as saying.

The recipients are schools along the Mandau River. To reach the location, one has to take the road from Pekanbaru to Perawang and continue by raft, arriving at the area in about two hours.

The company has also committed to assist with the rehabilitation of schools, health posts and clean water supply systems, the report said. (pan)
