250 compete in first stage of drag race

JAKARTA (JP): About 250 local drivers from eight teams will compete for a total cash prize of Rp 21 million in the first stage of the national drag race at Sentul circuit, near Bogor, on March 19.

Organizer Yama Sarwono, of the Rally Tama Group, said on Monday that compared to drag races in 1998 and 1999, the number of participants this year had declined.

"In 1998 there were 260 racers, while in 1999 there were 270. This year it has declined to only 250. Probably the decline is a result of the economic crisis. Nevertheless, we hope there will be more than 250 racers," Yama said.

Lola of the Sentul circuit said although the number of racers were getting fewer, the number of spectators had increased.

"We hope that at least 10,000 people will watch the drag race," Lola said.

The first stage of the drag race will feature 14 classes which will be divided into four categories: Pro Stock (formerly free for all), Modified Stock, sedans up to 4,000cc and Stock (sedans, minivans and jeeps).

The first stage of the drag race will be followed by the second (April 9), third (May 14), fourth (June 18), fifth (July 23), sixth (Sept. 3), seventh (Sept. 24) and eighth (Nov. 5).

Only the fourth stage will be held in Medan. The others are held at the Sentul circuit. (lnt)
