22-year-old man mistakenly killed

JAKARTA (JP): A 22-year-old man who was erroneously accused of
stealing a motorcycle was mobbed to death at Bumi Serpong Damai
housing complex in Tangerang on Thursday night.

The victim was identified as Yono, a construction worker in
the complex.

Rustadi said yesterday that his brother Yono, who was relaxing
with two of his friends in his workplace, was asked by somebody
to help push his motorcycle.

"When Yono and his friends helped push the motorcycle,
however, another man shouted 'Thief!' and nearby people
immediately chased after them," he said.

Rustadi said Yono's friends and the man who asked for help
managed to escape the mob, but Yono was caught and attacked.

"Yono was bewildered at seeing people running toward him so he
just stood there," said Rustadi.

Yono was severely injured and was immediately rushed to the
Kramat Jati Police Hospital, East Jakarta, where he died.

Yono's body was sent to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital
for a postmortem examination.

Rustadi said that Yono's body would be buried in their
hometown of Pemalang, Central Java. (ivy)
