185 pass screening for transportation council

A total of 185 of 335 applicants managed to pass the first phase of screening for the newly set up City Transportation Council (DTK).

DTK recruitment committee secretary Tubagus Haryo Karbyanto said on Monday that around 70 percent of the 185 were public transport users. The remaining 30 percent are academics, activists, bus crew and public transportation operators.

Tubagus pledged that the recruitment would be held in a fair and transparent way.

Each applicant must submit several documents, including a CV, school diplomas, the results of a test to certify he or she is drug-free, a doctor's statement that the applicant was in good health and an essay on transportation.

Committee chairwoman Ellen S.W. Tangkudung, a lecturer at the University of Indonesia (UI), said those who had passed the first screening were scheduled to take a written test on Aug. 7. The test will cover issues on transportation regulations and problems faced by the city.

Only 60 people will be selected for the final psychological test and interviews, scheduled for Aug. 25 and Aug. 26.

The thirteen applicants selected will be announced on Sept. 17. Together with a Jakarta Police officer and a city transportation agency official, they will be on the council for a two-year term.

Tubagus said the public would have the opportunity to give their views on the 60 council candidates from Aug. 25 to Aug. 31 before the announcement of the final 13 members.

The establishment of the council is mandated in Bylaw No. 12/2003 on transportation. The bylaw, which was deliberated on Nov. 13, 2003, requires that the city set up the council six months after the bylaw was deliberated. -- JP
