143 netted in IDs operation

At least 143 persons who were traveling without carrying identification cards, including six foreigners, were netted in the citizenship operation in North Jakarta.

H.M. Napis, a spokesman for the mayoralty administration, said that most of those netted on Wednesday's operation could not produce their identification cards when asked by the officials.

"Some of them carry only photocopies of their IDs," Napis said.

The 137 Indonesian were netted along with six foreigners in a citizenship operation in front of the Penjaringan district office on Jl. Pluit Raya.

The operation team ordered the Indonesians to pay a fine of between Rp 3,000 and Rp 20,000 on the spot in line with the operation procedures and foreigners Rp 5,000 each plus a Rp 500 administration fee.

The foreigners netted in the operation included four Filipinos, a Japanese and a Taiwanese.

During the operation, a joint team randomly stops vehicles on the road, including private cars, and requests passengers to produce their IDs. Those who cannot show their identification documents are judged on the spot and fined accordingly. (has)
