13,800 to be resettled

SEMARANG, Central Java: The provincial administration is hoping to resettle 13,800 people from the area to less-densely populated islands in the 1996/97 fiscal year which began on April 1.

The chief of the local office of the Ministry of Transmigration, Sunyoto, said 9,800 people will depart under the government sponsored transmigration program and 4,000 others will make their own arrangements.

Last year, the administration sent 27,830 people from Central Java to transmigration sites in Sumatra, Kalimantan and Irian Jaya, Antara reported.

Sunyoto said his office would intensify the campaign to woo people to join the resettlement program. (rms)
