136 people treated for food poisoning

BOGOR: A total of 136 residents of Pasir Datar hamlet in
Cibening village, Pamijahan district, Bogor regency, were taken
to community health centers last Friday morning with food
poisoning.

Four of the people were still being treated at the center on
Monday.

All 136 of the people are believed to have fallen ill after
eating food served at a party held at the Al Khoiriyah Muslim
boarding school on Thursday night, according to an official at
the local health agency, Euis Wulantari.

She said guests at the party were served rice, noodles, lamb
stew and fried chicken. After eating, people began to complain of
stomachaches, diarrhea and nausea. Some of the victims were taken
to the health center in Cibening, while others went to a health
center in Cibungbulang.

"We still don't know the exact cause of the food poisoning. We
are waiting for the results of laboratory tests of the food," she
said. --JP

TPJ urged not to cut water supply

JAKARTA: The City Council urged water operator PT Thames PAM
Jaya (TPJ) not to cut the water supply to low-cost apartments in
Klender, East Jakarta, stressing that the tenants should not
become victims of alleged corruption by the management.

"We hope that TPJ is patient as we hope there is still a way
out of the problem," Chairman of the Council Commission D for
development affairs Koeswadi Soesilohardjo told a hearing on
Monday.

Early last month TPJ threatened to cut water supply to the
apartments as its old management was in arrears for 32 months,
and owed Rp 411 million (US$47,400) in outstanding water bills.

A deadline of May 30 has been set.

At the hearing attended by officials from TPJ, and the current
and former management of the apartments, deputy head of former
management Hendra S. Husen revealed that some Rp 1 billion had
allegedly been stolen from the bills paid by the tenants.

TPJ sells water to the apartments' management for Rp 375 per
cubic meter and the former management of the apartment sold it to
tenants for Rp 850 per meter cubic.

Hendra said the case was reported to the police early in
April.

Koeswadi invited the interested parties to come to another
hearing on June 6 to try to resolve the problem.--JP

Students ask police to release friends

JAKARTA: A number of students demanded on Monday that police
release eight of their colleagues under police detention
following their arrest on May 21 in front of the House of
Representatives and the People's Consultative Assembly.

"We demand that the police release our friends," said JJ
Armstrong Sembiring, a lawyer representing the student group
Students Action Front for Reform and Democracy (Famred).

Police arrested eight students during a rally on May 21 which
resulted in a clash between police and students.

Similarly, dozens of students of the University of Indonesia
staged a peaceful rally in front of the Jakarta Police
Headquarters to demand the release of the students.

"We also condemn the use of violence by police to quell the
rally which is against the freedom of expression," said Galih, a
protester. --JP.
