135 sects banned in West Java

BANDUNG, West Java: Head of the provincial prosecutors' office M. Adenan has said 135 cults in the area were banned last year.

Adenan told Antara Wednesday the teachings disseminated and applied by the sects conflicted with accepted religious practices. He said the sects frequently offended and adulterated religious beliefs.

He cited the Ahmadiyah Qadian sect which taught that Ahmadi was the last Islamic prophet instead of Muhammad. The teaching and its literature could disturb the public, Adenan said.

He also cited the teachings of the Ratu Adil Imam Mahdi and Mayo sects which conflicted with Islamic faith. The latter stated that Adam's grave was located on Gedugan mountain, in Cililin district of Bandung, Adenan said.

He said 63 other sects were currently flourishing in West Java, none of which have been proven to upset or mislead the public. (01)
