13 regent candidates in Tangerang

TANGERANG: Thirteen people have registered for elections for the position of Tangerang regent for the 2003-2008 term.

This number was announced by the Tangerang regent election committee at the regency legislative council on the last day of registration, on Thursday.

The election committee secretary, Mas Iman Kusnandar, told The Jakarta Post that since registration was opened on Dec. 16, 59 of 100 registration forms provided by the committee had been taken, but only 25 had been returned.

Thirteen people will run for the position of regent, while 12 people will run for the post of deputy regent.

Kusnandar said the committee would pair up the regent candidates with the deputy regent candidates, with the election to take place at the regency legislative council in April.

Riril Suhartinah, a Banten provincial councillor from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan), is the only woman among the 13 regent candidates.--JP
