13 dead in river crash

JAKARTA (JP): Thirteen bodies have been recovered from a collision between two speedboats on Saturday morning in a river near Sampit town in Central Kalimantan. Another four are missing, feared drowned.

Sampit police chief Lt. Col. Ade Sudarna said the 13 included two other victims found Tuesday in the Katingan river.

The accident involving a total of 92 passengers and crew on the two boats occurred at 9:30 a.m. because of poor visibility, he told The Jakarta Post. Both boats were plying the route of Kasongan-Tumbangsamba.

Survivors are still in hospital. "We are continuing the search tomorrow," Ade said of the four missing people.

Five victims were found Saturday, and another six were recovered Sunday. He added the capacity of the boats was within normal limits, adding that they were respectively of 400 and 200 horsepower. (anr)
