12.5 percent of Jakartans poor

JAKARTA: Twelve percent of people in Jakarta are poor, a survey conducted by the city chapter of the National Family Planning Board (BKKBN) says.

Haryono Suyono, head of the central office of BKKBN, told a seminar on population that its survey in February this year found that of a total of 1,429,000 families in the city, about 114,290 were poor.

Antara reported that the number of people living in Jakarta was not tallied, but the Central Bureau of Statistic estimated that the city population was 8.2 million.

During the day, however, the population can reach more than 12 million as many people living in the city buffer zones of Bogor, Tangerang, Bekasi and Depok work in the capital. --JP
