1,000 shuttlers join circuit

SEMARANG (JP): More than 1,000 shuttlers were expected to compete in Zone B of the National Badminton Circuit in Tegal, Central Java, from Sept. 26 to Sept. 30, said organizing committee chairman Toegimin on Wednesday.

"We already have 100 shuttlers registered but the players usually register at the last minute one week before the championship," he said.

"Last year we recorded some 1,000 shuttlers so it's possible there will be more players this year," he added.

Toegimin, who is also secretary of the Central Java chapter of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI), said the event would also serve as a qualification for juniors to join the Indonesian Badminton Center (PBI) in Cipayung, East Jakarta.

"All players have the same chance to join the center with good performance," he said.

"They have to reach good levels in four consecutive championships. They also have to show consistency during the championships."

The four events are Jakarta Open, SGS Open, Surabaya Open, and the National Circuit.

He said the organizing committee sent invitations to all PBSI's chapters and badminton clubs throughout the country.

"But we didn't invite the Maluku chapter considering current social conflicts," he said. (har)
