1,000 evicted people to hold rally

JAKARTA (JP): Some 1,000 evicted people from Greater Jakarta plan to hold a massive rally in Central Jakarta's Kemayoran tomorrow morning, the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute said yesterday.

In a statement made available to The Jakarta Post, Dewi Novirianti and Amir Hamzah of the institute said the rally participants will first hold a flag-hoisting ceremony at 9 a.m. to commemorate the country's Aug. 17 Independence Day at a field in front of a Merpati Nusantara Airlines hangar in Kemayoran.

Some of the participants will then relate their experiences before taking to the streets in a convoy, the institute said.

It did not disclose where the convoy would heading.

Dewi and Amir said the event, titled the Great Meeting of Eviction Victims, also aimed to improve solidarity among evicted people of Jakarta. (jun)
