10-year jail term sought for blind woman

MEDAN, North Sumatra: Prosecutors demanded on Thursday that a blind woman be sentenced to 10 years in jail and fined Rp 150 million on charges of possessing 112 ecstasy pills.

Chief prosecutor Sedia Ginting said the defendant, known only as Ayn, 33, was arrested with the drugs at her house on Jl. Horas in Medan last October.

Judge A. Aziz Syarif adjourned the trial until next Wednesday to hear the defense's argument.

Aziz said he was shocked to see a young, blind woman being tried for her involvement in drug trafficking.

"My goodness, I just can't believe a disabled and blind woman is brought to court for trafficking illegal drugs. Are you really doing it yourself?" he asked in surprise. --Antara
