Sounds of silence heard one day of peace and quiet

Nyepi, the Day of Silence, was observed by Hindus on Friday.

The holiday is part of religious observances to welcome the Caka New Year. For Hindu believers, it is more than just a start of a new day, but also an important time to look back and to reevaluate what has been done right and what has been done wrong.

Devout Hindus abstain from four main worldly pursuits during Nyepi; refraining from the use of fire, physical activity, traveling and any kind of entertainment.

In this hectic, noisy and often difficult life today, this Nyepi could be used as a time to be alone and contemplate on important spiritual virtues. --The Jakarta Post
