Pope expected to be home before Easter

VATICAN: The Vatican said on Monday it hoped Pope John Paul would be able to return to the Vatican before the start of Holy Week activities leading up to Easter.

"We expect him to be back in the Vatican before the start of Holy Week," chief spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls told reporters in the latest health bulletin on the 84-year-old Pontiff.

Holy Week starts on Palm Sunday, which falls on March 20 this year.

The spokesman also said the Pope's general condition was continuing to improve and that no complications had set in.

The Pope, who also suffers from Parkinson's disease, has been in hospital since Feb. 24, when he underwent throat surgery to help ease severe breathing problems. He received earlier treatment in hospital from Feb. 1-10. -- Reuters
